Personal Tip or Opinion of the Day

Personal Tip – 15-minute cities – Mar 15/23

15-minute cities:  This is a term I have recently become familiar with due to a conversation with a friend.

It is an interesting comment and warrants some research, but is it feasible in Canada with its vastness?

Not everyone works within a 15-minute walking or biking distance…

If you are unaware of what a 15-minute city is, here are some links to check out.

If you think it isn’t coming to Canada, it already has – it is currently being investigated / implemented in Edmonton, AB.

“The idea behind the concept is to build cities in such a way that most daily necessities and services are located within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. Carlo Moreno, urbanist and professor at the Sorbonne University in Paris first came up with the idea in 2016. He wanted everyone to have easy access to shops, schools, doctors, the gym, parks, restaurants and cultural institutions”. – excerpt taken from

How would this concept work for seniors??

I will admit that it is an interesting concept and certain aspect could be applied but is it realistic to implement everywhere?

I am just starting to check into this information and research the idea and how that would work in my life or not work.

I just thought it warranted mentioning in case you weren’t aware.

Questions to Ponder:

How is this concept working for other places?

Who has already implemented them?

Are they working?

Will it work in Edmonton?

Will there be fines put in place if you leave your area?

Will you need permission to go further than your 15-minute allotment?  I think of this one as my parents are more than a 15-minute drive from me and as they are living on their own – I am there quite often, assisting them in different ways.

My son lives 2 provinces away – now we see each other annually, maybe more but how would that work?

Too many questions that I don’t have the answers to yet.

Would it work for you?

Thoughts…
