PDP - Personal Development Plan: Have you ever completed one of these through work or even in your personal life?
A PDP is very beneficial to help give you direction and goals in your professional life.
It assists with management to know where you are at currently and what direction you would like to see your career take. It also gives them an idea of what you are interested in learning and training for.
There are many different formats for PDP’s. Some are short and easy to complete, some are longer and more in-depth. It just depends on what information you are wanting to know and what end result you are looking at getting from completing one.
When I have conducted these in the past, I like to do a one on one meeting where I ask the question and then fill out the form with their response. It has worked better than just having the employee complete it on their own. This way, you get to know the person on a deeper level and they tend to focus more on the answer when doing it in this format.
I usually make time to do this meeting annually to see if anything has changed and then review it in six months to see if they are on target with reaching their goals or if they have gone in a different direction.
It is interesting to fill this out from a professional perspective, but on the flip side, it is neat to do one from a personal perspective.
It gives you more focus for your future – it helps give a clearer direction instead of floundering. It makes you think about what you truly want out of life.
It is a valuable document that should be utilized and reviewed.
Questions to Ponder:
Have you completed one?
Have you reviewed it?
Have you used one for your personal goals and life?
Would it interest you to complete one?
