Business Tip or Opinion of the Day

Business Tip / Opinion – Onboarding – Apr 5/22

Onboarding: I believe there is a right way and a wrong way to onboard new employees.

The wrong way and probably most common way is the sink or swim technique.  This technique consists of sharing the least amount of information while giving the new employee the best failure rate.

Setting people up to succeed in their new role is essential to their productivity and engagement in their position.

Giving guidance and direction can be very time consuming of your time or other peoples time.

That is why having an onboarding process is key.  Let the process be their guide and then they will need less of everyone else’s time and they will be able to accomplish many things on their own and feel confident about it.

Key elements to have in the onboarding process:

  •  Have information on all the software programs that you use within the process – even if they are simple programs, there could be interesting information that the person was not aware of and can utilize.
  • Have all their pay information in there and the key people to discuss this information with
  • Provide processes and procedures
  • Provide some simple health and safety aspects and where they can find the manual if one is required in your industry
  • Have any necessary forms
  • Provide the necessary training information
  • Provide a list of abbreviations and acronyms the company uses
  • Provide an organizational chart with photos so it is easy to find the people they need
  • Provide any and all necessary information to allow them the best possible outcome and results in their new position
  • Have fun with this and it will be an essential part of your business structure
