Business Tip or Opinion of the Day

Business Tip – Longevity & Loyalty – June 13/24

Longevity & Loyalty Long Gone?

Years ago, people tended to work in one place, collect their pension after their 20, 30 or 40 years of service and were fairly happy at the end of it.

In more recent years, people tend to stay anywhere from 2 to 10 years and then end up switching companies or careers and repeat that pattern.

So what has changed to create this – Employees – Businesses – Both?

I feel it is a combination of both.

I think the shift started years ago when companies went through some downsizing phases and let go of the people that were close to retirement (making the best decision for the company’s future and longevity) which actually started to create an insecure working environment for people that had previously been very loyal.  After this phase, people started moving around more in their jobs and careers.

There are many reasons why people start the process to leave: unfulfilled, stagnant work atmosphere, no room for promotion, conflict with Direct Report, do not feel appreciated, or moving to a different location, just to name a few.

There are different ways of looking at it.  I look at it this way:

A job or role is like a highway – it has different lanes.

The fast lane - these people are happy with their life and will stay.

The middle lane – these people are neutral – they can move in either direction depending on what opportunity comes along.

The slow lane – these people are on their way out – they are looking for the first chance to exit.

What keeps a person in the fast lane?

  • Fun
  • Enjoyment
  • Fulfillment
  • Passion
  • Sense of belonging
  • Sense of contribution
  • Sense of appreciation
  • Voice being heard
  • Good relationships
  • Support
  • Employee Engagement

Questions to Ponder:

What lane are you in?

There is a lot of cost involved in training people, having a revolving door of employees is never beneficial – look within your organization to see if changes need to be made to create an environment for employees to stay in the fast lane.
